this morning while flippin thru saturday morning cartoons, i saw this re-run of popstars 2, and im like, holy crap, that looks like that guy from the
livid, and then it's like, thats justin, and im wondering if thats the same guy, then i checked on the internet, and im like, holy crap it is,
justin, what a change in music, from organized pop to hard rock, wat made u change, and why dont u use ur contacts from popstars to land the livid and
steady record deal with promotions and all that? u are the same guy from the show right?

Obviously Justin is the best person to come and talk about this
..but I think he had been in "Ryde" (I think the full name is Ryde Dub Syndicate or something) for about 7 years before Velvet Empire
(Popstars) and then he auditioned for TheLivid and since about beginning of 2003 he was with them. He told me too at some point, I just can't
remember the full story.
It's funny, because I was watching Popstars (...again) this morning too, and they're all talking about the support from their families,
and being a 'real band' etc.
you won't let me down...

quotation: Velvet Empire is more than your typical pop ensemble. Janelle is a product of the Etobicoke School of the Arts, Lacey is a classically-trained
pianist, Alex is a formally-trained actress and singer, Ryan has been singing in the church since the age of three, and Justin is a rock ‘n roller
who plays drums and guitar.
"back in the day..."
It's scary how quick time passes by. 2002 doesn't feel so distant yet I remember meeting Justin the day after my Grade 8 graduation.
That's so long ago. Like, two years and a half.
How were you 14,Jenny? I was just about to turn 14 when VE was out, and I'm younger than you.

The Real Story from Me
Hey guys,
Dez had it 95% right with the story. The first day of high school when I was 11 years old, I met a dude who played guitar, his brother played bass
and I played drums (but not very well!!). We made a rock band that covered Nirvana, the Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam, and other garage bands from 1991
in my actual garage, how ironic!!
That band evolved over the next 9 years of my life to Ryde (aka The Ryde Dub Syndicate) comprised of myself on lead vox and rythm guitar (but easy
rythm guitar stuff), a lead guitar, bass, drums, keys and a MC. We played a whole bunch of covers by Sublime, Marley and the Police and had some
original stuff too that was very Sublime rock/reggae like.
At 21, I decided to tryout for Popstars just to try and get some industry contacts. The next thing I know I'm making the cuts and I'm in
the band Velvet Empire. The pop music was not my thing and reminded me how much I love the rock n roll. Velvet Empire had few shows and I was
getting ancy to play shows again and play some good old rock.
My buddy from Montreal came across a The Livid demo CD with Broke and Crossed on it and found out they were looking for a singer. My friend thought I
could pull off the singing and told me to call the old The Livid manager. So I did just that, tried out with Chris in his basement and he seemed to
have liked me cause I'm now in the band. I'm happy to be creating some great rock music with 3 other kick ass dudes and musicians.
Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. And am I ever happy to be singing the rock n roll again like I was meant to. Screw the
cheesy pop band stuff...that's why Much Music created the show Fromage in the 1st place (and Velvet Empire was on it for Fromage 2002!!). Glad
that's over with.
Thanks for being kick ass fans of The Livid.
Peace,
Justin

Justin!
95/100 sounds like a pretty decent grade, haha. I'll aim for a higher one next time.
Good to see you dropping by, I know you read the forums more than you post on them, but still.
You should drop by CMW again this year, this time without VE we can actually hang out for longer, haha.
