I'm guessing most people use Adobe Photoshop and Image Ready, since those are the most efficient programs to make icons with.

Aha!
Errm, for Mark's one, I used a picture of TV fuzz, and it moves and rotates every frame to give the effect of it being random. I made a way to
have it actually random every frame as well when I was making this website, but it was a little processor heavy. So now it is a repeated set of frames
and it looks fairly random to me. Then I took the old Livid logo (from the old website) and basically resized it and moved it every frame for the
"sketching around" effect.
I used Flash, and exported as an animated gif.
For my own avatar, I also used Flash. The Flash movie of it is truly random - every frame the two dragons move to random positions within certain
bounds from the centre, and their transparencies change accordingly. They're also scaled randomly so sometimes they're stretched.
But the finished avatar is a gif, not a Flash file, and I had to move the dragons to random places by hand, scale them, and change their transparency
for each frame. Which was not ideal, but I think it looks pretty good.
I am going to make more, and have them available for all.

Jeff's avatar is another of my creations It's a phoenix, and a shell. I forgot the name of the shell, but Jeff will fill you in if you
want to know.

A nautilis shell. It has multiple mathmatical and philosophical meanings, at least for me.
