Okay everyone I need HELP...

"Compare the treatment of Japanese Canadians after Pearl Harbour and their internment to the treatment of the Middle Eastern Canadians after September 11,2001"

Please, before you comment on this notice the fact that I said middle eastern "canadians" and NOT americans, I already kinda made a mistake on my essay...

I shall come and explain details on what this is for later on, but this is something that I hope some, if not most of you can help me out on...and yeah.

Deadline is May..but still

Thank you all in advance
*runs to class*

What you really have here is a case of history repeating itself.

After Pearl Harbour there was a mistrust of Japanese Canadians that spread throughout the country. It was essentially state sponsored racism. Their possessions were taken away as well as all their rights as Canadian citizens. They were then forced into what were essentially concentration camps (Without all the killing of the 3rd Reich style concentration camps)

This is comparable to the post 9/11 situation in that society has adopted a critical, suspicious and often racist position towards middle eastern Canadians. Just as Japanese Canadians' rights as citizens were taken away so too have the rights of muslim citizens. There have been at least two cases of America taking Syrian-Canadians and shipping them back to Syria where they have subsequently been tortured. There has also been the obvious racist violence towards muslims, (ie. the burning of mosques, the damaging of muslim private property such as shops.)

I'm not sure what else you're looking for. I can try to help if you have more specific comments.

You can also tie the issue into the questions it raises for the general population of Canada. Tougher boarder controls, biometric passports, iris scanning, new airport technology. All this stuff has effects on travel obviously.

Any help is welcome, Danielle..this is not just to you but to everyone:
Dont look at this as an "essay" what I am currently trying to gather is as much information on the subject as possible..

I fully wrote like 2 full pages already, yet they're based on AMERICANS and that's not what this is supposed to be,

Following Pearl Harbour, as Jeff said there was a great mistrust of any asian decendants most of which was perpetraded by our own and the american goverment. I find interesting how the word racisim can be cleverly hidden in the word patriotism when it so suits the goverment.

Just heard this morning that it was Mackenzie King who sent these Japanese Canadians to concentration camps for being "disloyal" to the country?.

I just think I need a quick, blunt understanding of the events at Pearl Harbour before I go any further.

Thanks a lot to Jeff and Chambered3Heart so far.

Pearl Harbor, on the Island of O'ahu, Hawaii, (then a territory of the United States) was attacked by the Japanese Imperial Navy, at approximately 8:00 A.M., Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. The surprise attack had been conceived by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. The strking force of 353 Japanese aircraft was led by Commander Mitsuo Fuchida. There had been no formal declaration of war.

Approximately 100 ships of the U.S. Navy were present that morning, consisting of battleships, destroyers, cruisers and various support ships.

Two destroyers, the USS Cassin (DD372) and the USS Downes (DD375) were in dry dock #1 (with the USS Pennsylvania) and the destroyer USS Shaw (DD373) was in floating dry dock #2, approximately two hundred yards to the west. The USS Ogala (CM-4) was moored next to the USS Helena (CL50) near the "1010" dock, Naval Ship yard. Two heavy cruisers, the USS New Orleans (CA32) and the San Francisco (CA38) were in the Navy Yard Repair Basin

Over half the U.S. Pacific fleet was out to sea, including the carriers.

Simultaneously, nearby Hickam Field was also the victim of the surprise attack by the Japanese.
18 Army Aircorps aircraft including bombers and fighters and attack bombers were destroyed or damaged on the ground. A few U.S. fighters struggled into the air against the invaders and gave a good account of themselves.

A total of twenty-nine Japanese aircraft were shot down by ground fire and U.S pilots from various military installations on O'ahu.
