Emo

Well there's a Ska thread so I figured I'd point something out.

These days "Emo" is becoming more and more and more popular. But exactly what is Emo? It's stands for Emotion or Emotional yes but can a type of music really be called Emo? Bands these days present their style of music as Emo and nothing else. Can this really be? I mean just cuz your music has emotional lyrics does that make it emo? So many different bands with so many different sounds have lots of music containing emotional lyrics so does that make them emo aswell? I sure don't think so. I just think emo is being thrown around to much these days.

And when I get called "emo" for some of the clothes I wear, what does that mean? Is emo some kinda new style? Where is this all going? I'll admit I do listen to alot of rock, punk rock, alternative, pop-rock, whatever, and I guess you could say a lot of it does have emotional lyrics. So I do listen to Emo then, and I guess a lot.

Then you got your sreamo too but I'm not gonna get started on that...

Anyways what are your thoughts on this?
Thanks,

Eric,

How do you communicate those emotions that are so intense that no physical expression or series of words can even scratch the surface?

imo = in my opinion

Emo = Overy EMOtional lyrics and music(basically). eg. Dashboard confessional. It tends to produce some of the most annoying fans this side of new kids on the block.

I listen to Finch and Brand new .. does that make me emo ?

I would say proper emo is something like "saves the day" when the lead singer starts crying and makes the front row weep aswell. Arrrrrrghh !

emo songs tend to have sung notes held for a long time while chords change slowly, but loudly, underneath.

i listen to the cure sometimes. are they emo? i think they fit the definition given. careful with your words.

Amid the chaos of that day, when all I could hear was the thunder of gunshots, and all I could smell was the violence in the air, I look back and am amazed that my thoughts were so clear and true, that three words went through my mind endlessly, repeating themselves like a broken record: you're so cool, you're so cool, you're so cool. And sometimes Clarence asks me what I would have done if he had died, if that bullet had been two inches more to the left. To this, I always smile, as if I'm not going to satisfy him with a response. But I always do. I tell him of how I would want to die, but that the anguish and the want of death would fade like the stars at dawn, and that things would be much as they are now. Perhaps. Except maybe I wouldn't have named our son Elvis.

I am certain I am correct because you cannot define a genre based upon the emotional content of its lyrics.

All music is emotional both in the playing and the lyrics. You think Hank Williams III wasn't emotional when he was singing about being drunk because his girl left him and he had nothing in his life? Sounds pretty damn emotional to me.

The sheer fact that music can arouse so many emotions in people is a testament to the fact that there is no such thing as emo. Those who label themselves emo are trying to describe a certain sounding type of rock and roll. Their labelling may serve as a way to describe their sound but that is still worlds away from being able to say that your band is difinitively in a certain genre.
