Ian, I'd like to think that if you expained it to me I'd get it. I've just never actually had any form of music lesson before.
Actually, Bart, over MSN, gave me an hour long lesson. I had to go, but he was willing to teach me alot more. I understand alot more now, but
it's taking a little time to digest because it was so much. The next lesson will be uncommon time signatures. We didn't get that far.

I once started writing a song with a 16th note part superimposed over an 8th note triplet part, both on guitar. It sounded sweet, but I never really
finished it...
I would also like to say that while you can write music, (even good music) without the theory, you can never really "get to the next
level" without it. It's absolutely key.

Rob, I have to disagree. The next level of music is not centred around theory. The next level is whatever takes all music scenes by storm (the
mainstream, the underground etc) and is able to present music in an original and compelling way while still retaining loads of credibility. Whether
theory is involved or not, I don't think it makes a difference. It's all about substance. Although theory can add substance I do not
think it is an essential ingredient for 'the next level.'

I agree with Jeff 100% I've been trying to think of way to say exactly that all day! Thanks Jeff!
It's great to be able to utilize the theroy, but in doing so it's easy to loose the other elements of a song that are so vital (melody,
rythym, structure etc.) Thats not to say that you can't have the best of both worlds in a song/composition. You definetly can (Dream Theater
comes to mind.) But it's a very fine line to walk.

That's not what I meant, Jeff. No amount of theory can make your songs popular, obviously. But without the theory, there will always be so much
that you can't do. Perhaps this is a little anecdotal to be a valid argument, but it sure was for me. The more you learn, the more tools you
will have at your disposal to achieve your desired result.
I guess this really comes down to what your definition of the "next level" is. Mine had more to do with technical proficiency, and I
suppose that that was a little narrow in the context of the musical environment.

well it wasn't so much an argument... but yeah. as reivax knows, the tide's verses are 5/8 for two bars and then 6/8 for the next two, and
so on.
for the record, when i said i was pretty sure they were 5/8 all the way through, all i had to go by were 30 second video clips of the song played
live.
