i think that one of the best things you can do to work up your tightness when playing with a click is as follows...
put your metronom at a very slow pace... like 45 clicks per minute... then what you have to do is metally think that there is a triplet between each
beat... but don't play the triplet everytime... only play the first and third beat of the triplet every third time.... so if the counting is
supposed to be 1,2,3,1,2,3, then only play on the 1..1..1.3.1..1..1.3.
get it?? its not easy but the slower you can do it the better you will be when you actually play full songs to a click... it becomes second nature...
and for those of you that are saying to yourself that you don't play to a click so there is no need to work on it... i should point out that
every professionnal drummer plays to a click... at least in studio so get it down and you will be better off for it...

best drummer? after me i'd say someone like Mitch Mitchell or Joe Morello - pioneers. obviously buddy rich deserves a mention. if you're
talking about modern drummers, it's pretty tough to find someone who is way above the rest. it all depends on the kind of music.
there are two ways to get the double bass effect. one is to have two seperate bass drums, with two single pedals. the other is to have a
double bass drum pedal which puts two beaters on a single drum. one beater is controlled by the left foot, and one by the right. like my DW9002
for example.
there is a piece of hardware which allows you to (effectively) get a quad bass effect - it has two beaters on each pedal (one controlled by ankle
rotation, one by heel movement). but if you're concerned with speed then there isn't really a point in that setup (just listen to adrian
erlandsson of cradle of filth - he plays fast).
i can't be bothered to write more. so there.

just learnt a hot new beat: Base, Base+Symbol, Snare (Right-Accent), Snare (Left-Double-Tap), Snare (Right), Snare (Left-Accent), Base, Base+Symbol,
Base+Symbol, Base+Symbol. Something like that - it rocks!!
I'm still having problems with the tom drums though...

try playing semiquavers (16th notes) on snare/tom1/snare/tom2/snare/floor tom/snare
this is just for co-ordination. make sure you play to a click or metronome.

the best thing to get good at timing when playing fills without a metronome is to play straigh bass notes marking the time in 1 2 3 4 and hit hats
with foot in 2 and 4
