Drummers out there: tips thread!
Ok guys, which of you play drums?? I've been playing for a couple of months now, and have come somewhat to a standstill in my progress (not
having lessons yet, i can't just ask my teacher, and i thought this thread would b cool anyway). I think my rythm is coming along pretty nicely,
but i'm having trouble with fills using the tom drums. I've also got my double tapping pretty much sorted, but could do with some ideas
for lighter hits, rim shots (i.e. when to use them? - on the symbol as well - if that's what u call it on symbols (maybe just hitting them
harder?!) and accenting. cheers.

i guess it's rock, hardcore, alternate mostly, a bit of punk (but just for the fast stuff - especially as this seems to be what pep. are most
impressed by) and I could never say no to a bit of chilled out jazz. influences include The Livid (of course), The Used, Alice In Chains,
RATM/Audioslave, Foo Fighters, Hundred Reasons, Hell Is For Heroes the list goes on really. The Rocket Summer has provided a lot of inspiration too,
and Coldplay, but don't really bother playing that, as i don't find it all that challenging (same as Audioslave then)...

basically, and this has probably been said a million times, the most important thing is to feel the music. i tend to use accents to bring out
little irregularities in the tune, maybe mimic the singer or perhaps just to add a bit of variety. the bottom line is to stay in time, don't
worry about monster fills, that'll all come.
i have some good exercises for developing movement around the kit at home, which i will put online when i get there (later this month.)

ok cool cheers man, i'm kinda getting there with the whole 'feeling the music thing', but i'm still a bit sceptical over the
whole thing... i haven't really had a chance to test out timing skills yet, however got some m8s who play guitar and various other instruments,
so hopefully will b able to jam with them sometime soon...

Accents really aren't that hard to learn. Its just a matter of practice makes perfect to be honest. There is something to watch out for
though.
While your improving your accents, be sure to accent with both hands. People tend to only accent with their dominant hand, and drumrolls and fills can
sometimes sound weak when dependant on your off-hand.

try playing to your favourite CD's or a click track or metronome. also, try to play singles (or other rudiments) starting with your weak hand.

true.
so i was playing today and im pretty sure i know what u mean about 'feeling the beat' - would just apear that you start to get an instinct
about when add beats, etc... seems to come pretty naturally too...

ok cool, by singles u just mean single hits right...?
singles would usually refer to:
RLRLRLRLRLRLRLRLR
or
LRLRLRLRLRLRLRLRL
but for endurance you can do things such as:
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
and
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
but try and keep in constant. try starting this at a slow speed:
RRRR LLLL RRRR LLLL RRR
when that becomes easy, get a bit faster.
then you can experiment with longer patterns, ie
RRRRRR LLLLLL RRRRRR LLLLLL
see what i mean?

Drumrolls are the bitches:
RRLLRRLLRRLLRRLLRRLLRRLLRRLLRRLLRRLL.
Sounds so good if you can do it that way, but most people (me included) do it the cheaters way and let the sticks bounce.

if my memory serves me, there are two types distinct type of roll - buzz (closed) and open. both involve bouncing, but open rolls involve just
one bounce per hand (similar to what you mentioned) and buzz rolls are when you try and get as many bounces as possible per hit. both are good .
having said that, i may well have got the names mixed up - but my point is still there... bouncing is never cheating, it just depends on what sound
you want.

I was tought one with two strikes per hand, and one where you get as many in (the bouncing one). My point is that the bouncing one is so much easier
but sounds nowhere near as good, so it's kind of a slacker's drumroll.

the one where you get as many hits as possible is more of an exercise i think. i would show you what i'm trying to say, but i can't
**footnote**
obviously RLRLRLRLRL is referred to as a single stroke roll, and rrllrrllrrll as a double stroke roll.
**end of footnote**
