Concert Reviews

I wanna what shows everyone's recently been and what you thought of it. I go to at least a show a week so I thought this would be fun.

Gonna see Johnny Marr and the Healers tonight at the Opera House. Saw them this January with Mellowdrone. Actually I went specifically to see Mellowdrone even though they were only opening. Stayed for Marr and was amazed. He truly is a living legend. Mellowdrone was supposed to open again but for some unknown reason Mr Bates cancelled all his dates. Boo urns

I'll have a review when I get back.

Johnny Marr and the Healers with Paolo Alto

Interesting, not very many concert-goers in here. Ah well, I guess go to enough to cover everybody.

Quick review of Johnny Marr and the Healers tonight at the Opera House: Quarter to 8 and only about a dozen people in line. Very strange because in January a crapload of us waiting in sub-zero temperatures outside Lee's Palace hours before the show.

8:15 they take us in, confiscate everyone's cameras. Bastards!! Paolo Alto (So-cal rock band) take the stage at 9:15. Great set full of energy, 9 songs. The place is still empty.

Hanging around for a while during the changes on stage. The place finally starts to get full. Johnny Marr comes out to a huge ovations. Plays almost everything off the album and a couple of new tracks.

This man makes guitar look so easy. He plays so non-chalant, posing and holding the guitar in every which way. Absolute crowd pleaser. Great set, about 12 songs and 2 encore songs.

Thumbs up for the whole show.

6th Annual White Ribbon

K, here's my reivew of the White Ribbon Benefit Concert from June 3rd at the Phoenix.

It was a totally packed house and for good reason. We had Gord Downie, Gordie Johnson, Edwin, Holly McNarland, Todd Kerns, the Watchmen and the Tea Party perform. (oh yea, snow was there too, *cough*)

Three hours of jams and covers including some Bob Marley and Led Zeppelin. Another thumbs up show, lots of energy from the performers and a really excited crowd. Check out a whole whackload of pictures at http://www.brethart.ca/concerts/whiteribbon

Zed (and Colorblind)

I went and saw Zed a couple nights ago, had to set up for them actually. Personally i didn't like it, a lot their songs sound the same and the crowd was too small (pub gig) because the only song people know is Renegade Fighter. They should really have toured AFTER the new album is released but oh well.

Colorblind were good though, they're an Aussie band so none of you would have heard of them (not even sure if you've heard of Zed actually), but they sounded good.

Wow, I miss going to weekly concerts. Finger Eleven is playing in Thunder Bay tomorrow but I can't afford to take the day off work to drive all the way to the city for the show.

Fortunately I was able to get my fill of live music this weekend at my town's annual music festival. It was a classic rock-themed weekend so I saw CCR, Rolling Stones and ABBA cover bands as well as the headliners, Trooper. The mullets were out in full force and I came to the realization that I live in the biggest hick town ever. Good times!

Zed are, for lack of a better genre, pop rock.

Colorblind are rock, kinda like Evanescence only with a less operatic singing style.

If you're ever dressed up downtown Toronto and got nowhere to go, be sure to check out the Reservoir Lounge at 44 Wellington. I've only been there once, but I love it. It's a semi-upscale jazz club. I had the privilage of seeing Danny B perform some blues tunes with the lounge's terrific house band. There's absolutely nothing like it.

i just recently saw smile empty soul, seether, and trapt. smile empty sould is a killer up and coming band... might want to check them out. i got to meet them and they were cool too. the single is bottom of a bottle. not a big fan of seether, so i dont have much to say about them. trapt was really good though. their cd is awesome, and headstrong definately is not the best. they definately put on a good show.

Ozzy Osbourne at the ACC

I'd really like to give this show a thumbs between but since it's not available, thumbs up will do.

First off, I forgot my camera at home so I don't have any photos. Sorry folks. The show started with Voidvod. Now everyone says these guys are thrash metal veterans, but they look and sound more like Fubar rejects. Just a horrible way to start out the night, a totally dead crowd for them.

Things should probably pick up when Finger Eleven come out to play. But another disappointment. The crowd is dead again, and if I wasn't so courteous to the people behind me, I would've been the only person standing up for them. They opened with Above, a couple of new tracks including the one from Daredevil. They then played Good Times, a couple more new tracks and then closed with First Time. I think they lost the crowd because of all the new material. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but when you're an opener, I don't care if you have a new album coming out, you should play the crowd-pleasers otherwise you lose everybody.

Finally Ozzy comes out. These old goofs behind me tap me on the back and say they can't see because they're sitting down. At this point I feel like flipping them off, but instead I'm just nice and pointed to every other section that was standing up and simply ignored them. Who the f*ck sits down at an Ozzy show?! Jeebus!!

Ozzy's energy suprised me. He played for well over 2 hours. He had more energy than half the crowd. They couldn't keep an Oz-zy Oz-zy chant going for more than 15 seconds and didn't make enough noise when Ozzy said he couldn't f*cking hear us.

He didn't mess up a single line or stutter once during the between-song banter. He managed to crank out all the hits from War Pigs, to NIB, Crazy Train, No More Tears and Mama I'm Coming Home. The only song I didn't hear that I wanted to was Over the Mountain.

The Ozzman proved he's got what it takes to keep on rocking in the free world. He even had some choice words to say to the bands that cancelled because of the SARS scare.

Overall, the performances I went to see were great, the experience itself wasn't the best.

I wouldn't have thought that Ozzy had the rights to NIB and War Pigs, considering Iommi wrote the music.

I think they could've put their silly squandering aside about issues like that. It wouldn't make sense for anybody else to be singing Sabbath stuff unless they're covering it.

Sorry, I just don't like Ozzy and I really don't like the fact that people associate him as being Black Sabbath (not saying you are), when Ronnie James Dio was so much better than he was in terms of singing.

Anyway, enough of my whinging.

Crap, I almost forgot about this thread!! Not much time for reviews, so I'll basically list a few shows I've seen since Ozzy and give a quick review.

The Swallows and Zeppelinesque at Lee's Palace June 20th: Kick ass by both bands. Doesn't get much more fun than seeing people of all ages (19+) boppin to Zepp.

Saucepan Heroes June 30th at the Horseshoe. Fun power-pop-rock band. Young group, full of energy, nice tunes, cool Hives cover.

Mission Press and the Illuminati at the Horseshoe July 2nd. Hmm... I can't even remember this one. Probably wasn't too good.

Forty Foot Echo and Three Days Grace opening for Theory of a Who What? Who gives a rats ass about Theory. I paid my $15 to see 3DG and got my money's worth out of Forty Foot Echo alone. Helluva stage presence by both bands. Has anyone noticed that the lead guitarist for FFE looks alot like Anthony Kiedis? And has anyone seen that freaky stare that Brad of 3DG has on his face.
Helluva show, the guitar smashing didn't go over too well with the stage floor though. It gave before the guitar did.

Summer Sanitarium July 5th at the Skydome. Only a few words are needed for that... lots of pain, lots of enjoyable pain!

Thats about it for now.

Edit: Adding link to my photos of the 3DG show

Meetings at the IFS Show

Saw New Brunswick's own In Flight Safety open for the Royals and Sticky Rice (didn't get to stick around to see either of the two) at the Rivoli on Friday night.

I originally met the guys from IFS at the Cameron House during Jonny James' first solo set for NXNE and picked up their EP Vacation Land. Maritime folk are cool Jonny came by to see them to play on Friday and so did (now) local artist Andrew Spice. He said I was the first person that has ever recognized him in public.

Back to IFS... if anybody is into Coldplay at all, or even if you're not and just simply can't get the Clocks tune out of your head, be sure to check out In Flight Safety. They're more experiemental melodic rhythm than complex songwriting. Vacation Land is very soothing but live its just unbelievable. They showcased a lot of new material from their forthcoming album.

Be sure to check them out at inflightsafety.ca. And in case you're wondering, I don't get paid for saying any of this.

Edit: Adding link to my photos of the show

Beaches International Jazzfest

If anyone gets a chance over the next couple of days, be sure to hit the Beaches (Queen St East of Woodbine) after 7pm for loads of live Jazz on the street. Very relaxing atmosphere, and everyone can have a good time.

I saw the Samba Sqaud, who are a group of talented drummers, Down with Webster and a bunch of others. Anyone who was at the Livid's Reverb show on April 16th would remember Down with Webster. They're a jazz/blues/hip hop act and are just a thrill to see live. They're such a refreshing change from the ordinary and the crowd was definately pleased.
