Rob's post about his crazy gas station experience reminded me of a message all of you should know about. This is one way all of you and your
families can help the environment. For those of you who don't know, Esso is a gas station. I'm not sure if you people have it in the USA
or England but it's a pretty big chain of gas stations here in Canada.
Esso is doing more than any other company to stop international action to tackle climate change. We all want action to tackle climate change. But
how can we stop Esso destroying our future and our children's future?
It's Easy: DON"T BUY ESSO.
1. Esso denies the climate change science:
Unlike Esso, scientists and governments worldwide agree that burning fossil fuels like oil and coal causes climate change. We all know our
weather's getting weirder and scientists tell us why - but Esso isn't listening.
2. Esso is not investing in alternatives:
Esso is making a fortune from destroying the planet. But unlike other oil companies, Esso refuses to invest one penny of its $15 billion, U.S.-a-year
profits in clean, renewable energy like wind and solar power.
3. Esso is sabotaging global action:
Esso has done more than any other company to undermine the Kyoto Protocol, the only international treaty to fight climate change. In fact, it's
largely because of Esso that President Bush has abandoned Kyoto - and Esso's fighting hard to make sure Canada does the same.
4. Esso causes smog:
Esso makes Canada's dirtiest gasoline with the highest sulphur content of any company - and that means more smog.

Wow...
I honestly would have never guessed it was Esso, out of all chains.
I think that what we use is Sunoco...but then again, who knows
Thanks Jeff, that was quite an interesting article.
And...what would an "action pack" have inside?...

I live right behind an Esso...I shall go throw rocks at the workers muaha. Good fun.
The night's as hot as hell. It's a lousy room in a lousy part of a lousy town - I'm staring at a goddess. She's telling me she
wants me. I'm not going to waste one more minute wondering how I've gotten this lucky. She smells like angels ought to smell, the perfect
woman... the Goddess. Goldie. She says her name is Goldie.

The Greenpeace people and others were handing out tons of info on this at the REM concert a while back. By far their worst offence is not admitting
that they are one cause of our environmental concerns.
Money into research and action plans to save our future on this planet is what we need urgently. I'm sure Allison will have a lot to say on
this...

there are activist groups that do much more harm than good. some of the stuff that greenpeace does is awful - although i think that animal rights
groups and activists are the worst offenders.

Chris is right, there are activists who only go out there to cause shit and do things that are immoral. The best weapon is information and a hip way
to deliver it to your target audience.

Jeff's point is a valid one but I urge all of you to do some research into causes such as this before jumping on political bandwagons. Some of
the points in the Stop ESSO campaign are pretty weak, but I'll leave that for another day.
It sounds to me like ESSO is being nailed to the cross for the sins of all major oil companies. From my experience there are very few big-name
petroleum operations that are environmentally (or socially) conscious. The fact that other gas companies are being heralded as "green"
corporations is only a result of highly publicized and carefully orchestrated media stunts by groups like Greenpeace.
For instance, in 1995 Shell finalized plans to sink an obsolete oil-storage platform off the coast of Scotland. Though this is a widely accepted
practice Greenpeace saw the event as a chance to make Shell look like the ultimate bad guy. Activists descended upon the barge as it was being towed
out to sea and television cameras followed by the dozens. Try as they might Shell could not turn the activists away. As a result they conceded to
return the barge to shore and spend millions of dollars to dispose of it on land.
Because of the tarnished image their company received, Shell spent years trying to revamp the way they were viewed by the public. Although
they've done little more than issue a few hippie-friendly press releases and make some inflated statements about how "concerned"
they are about the environment, people have eagerly bought into the facade.
Satisfied with their efforts, activists are now turning their attention to other companies.
Hence the ESSO campaign.
It's all politics.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a full-fledged tree-hugging hippie and think it's fantastic that this issue is getting some exposure.
However, as someone mentioned above, groups like Greenpeace often do more harm than good when it comes to raising awareness and it's my hope
that you guys see all sides of this matter before making conclusions.
As a side note, I just finished reading an amazing book by Naomi Klein called "No Logo" which details in great length the global
phenomenon of corporate brands. One of her case studies includes the above story about Shell. It's an interesting (albeit depressing) read that
I highly recommend.

It's all about image. I go to a school innundated by hippies. Some of them are really cool people but many of them have very contradictory ideas
about living. Not that it matters since this has nothing to do with Esso...

I'm an environmental studies student at York, fairly Hippy-ish myself.
Esso is being nailed to the cross because they've allowed people a window of opportunity to do so. All major oil companies are doing bad
things, we all know that. Some however, are giving money to researching alternative energy sources.
I didn't post this up here without doing my research.

Amid the chaos of that day, when all I could hear was the thunder of gunshots, and all I could smell was the violence in the air, I look back and am
amazed that my thoughts were so clear and true, that three words went through my mind endlessly, repeating themselves like a broken record:
you're so cool, you're so cool, you're so cool. And sometimes Clarence asks me what I would have done if he had died, if that bullet
had been two inches more to the left. To this, I always smile, as if I'm not going to satisfy him with a response. But I always do. I tell him
of how I would want to die, but that the anguish and the want of death would fade like the stars at dawn, and that things would be much as they are
now. Perhaps. Except maybe I wouldn't have named our son Elvis.

True. And that's why I:
a) don't own a car
b) walk/bike/run/crawl to my destination whenever possible
c) take public transit if no other form of transportation is feasible
Unfortunately we live in a world that doesn't function without petroleum. Eliminating the use of oil products from our lives is impossible at
this point in time.
