I never took lessons because there wasn't anyone around that taught the instrument. Only thing I had trouble with was artificial harmonics since
I had no idea how to do them. I ended up finding a little tap harmonics tutorial on the net and found out they were the same thing.
Oh, and on the subject of playing original songs (I'm pretty sure there was something mentioned a page back or so), I'll probably keep
playing covers until I master Country Music by Stu Hamm and Amazing Grace by Victor Wooten, once I can play them there's nothing else I can
learn from other people's songs, and the only way I'd get any better is to play my own stuff.

I never really took lessons, i went for 2 of them once and I realised that if I were to go this way it would go by WAY toooo slow, so I decided to
learn on my own hehe and as Reivax said! the internet was there when ever I got stuck!!!!

On another note, i was curious as if some people on this forum managed to do anything crazy with there guitar, using like random objects or doing non
normal guitar things. like for instance using just the clean sound and a touch or reverb i can do church bell sounds with my guitar, my buddy
showed me that, and told me im not allowed to reveal the secret, but i have gotten close to doing a police siren with a quarter and distortion.
has anyone done anything weird like that??

Should someone who plays guitar learn how to read theory, or should they just go buy something else, such as Tablature. OR, should they just keep on
improving their skill, because right now I don't know which one to do. I already know the Treble Clef and Bass Clef notes, I just don't
know where the notes are supposed to be played on the neck.

Practice scales, and other various technical exercises while reading them off of a sheet of tab. Then you can do all 3 at once.

back to the crazy sounds, i wrap my strings aroud the neck too. it sounds really cool. and in one of my songs that i made up, i take my string, and
push it onto my pickup, and it makes a high-pitched chirping sound which sounds awesome.

i don't know what you mean by "read theory". if you know the treble and bass clef notes already... can you read note values and so
rhythms? as for where you play them on the neck, notation doesn't tell you that (unless there are chord frames or unless you can work out what
they mean by the fingering they may or may not have given) -- you have to work out the easiest/best sounding way to play it yourself.
if i'm given a score, i'll be able to play it on guitar eventually but it'll take me ages to change the dots into positions on the
fingerboard. some people can do it without thinking, but it doesn't seem to be a skill i need. i can usually work songs out (roughly) by ear
without much trouble, or read tablature. but if you're interested in improving your skill in all areas of guitaring (and for certain types of
music or certain kinds of band it'd definitely be useful) then go right on and work out which notes can be played where. everything's up
to you.

as for crazy sounds, you can't beat harp harmonics. and fake feedback (as heard in the livid - play harmonics and fade them in). and pickslides.

I love fake feedback! My personal favourite is using the harmonic on the A string 7th fret. Especially for songs in E minor...
Another cool effect I have used is sliding the edge of your pick perpendicularly across the strings near the pickups, while sliding the pick slightly
across the strings horizontally. You'll probably need AT LEAST a little distortion though.

the best pickslide is when you slide up the thinner wound strings and then down the fat ones. weeeeoooowwww!

I've never considered Mike Shinoda to be a good guitarist, or a guitarist for that matter. For a band as big as Linkin Park, power chords or
miniscule riffs don't cut it. PLUS they have two guitarits, which should make the guitar in the songs that much better.

i have no opinion of that guitarist. but PIS, just because the guy inspired amy's playing style, and he's one of her favourite guitarists,
doesn't mean she thinks he's a fantastic guitarist. think about it.

Oh I thought of another cool trick. Stick a pick between your E, G and B strings (the 3 highest pitched ones) right near the brigde. The strings sound
like a detuned organ. It's very cool.
